Early reading skills include identifying letters and sounds, and recognizing those sounds in beginning and end word blends. Find many ways to practice word blends with your child using these word blends printables and activities.
Readers must know letter sounds, and understand the difference between vowels and consonants before learning blends. Having the ability to sound out basic consonant-vowel-consonant words will also be helpful.
Word blends are consonant groups that blend together at the beginning or end of a word. Unlike digraphs that make one sound, each letter in a beginning or end blend keeps its individual sound.
Examples of beginning blends: sp, cr, pr, cl, br, bl.
Examples of ending blends: nd, rd, ld, st, mp, rk.
Longer, more difficult words contain blended consonants. Learning the concept of blended letter sounds helps children be able to read and spell more words.
A reader who is struggling will show difficulty reading words with blended sounds. Practice by saying each sound faster, gradually leaving less space between sounds, until your child can guess the word.
