Tips for Homeschooling for Free
Start with what’s free, then fill gaps. You might be surprised how much ground you can cover with free resources before you need to spend anything. Many families find they only need to purchase one or two core curriculum items and can fill everything else with free printables and library books.
Use the library relentlessly. Beyond books, many libraries offer free museum passes, educational kits, STEM equipment loans, and online learning platforms. Ask your librarian what’s available — you’ll be amazed.
Join homeschool co-ops. Sharing curriculum, teaching responsibilities, and resources with other families multiplies what you can access. Many co-ops also negotiate group discounts on field trips and curriculum.
Don’t underestimate YouTube. Free educational content on YouTube is extraordinary. Channels like CrashCourse, SciShow Kids, National Geographic Kids, and Khan Academy cover nearly every subject at every level.
Rotate and reuse. Print worksheets on cardstock and laminate them so they can be reused with dry-erase markers. Pass curriculum along to younger siblings. Trade with other homeschool families.
Remember: expensive doesn’t mean better. Some of the most effective homeschool methods — narration, nature study, copywork, read-alouds — cost nothing beyond a library card and a notebook.
Homeschooling is one of the best investments you can make in your children’s future. And with the resources available today, the financial barrier has never been lower. You can do this — and FHD is here to help you every step of the way.
