Magical Childhood — Free 34-week MSB lesson plans
Who It’s For
Listed for PreK through 4th grade. It’s a strong fit if you want a light science spine, your kids learn well from stories and video, or you’d rather not spend curriculum money on science this year.
Younger kids can watch and do the simple project; older elementary siblings can dig into the book day or add notebooking on the side.
Whats Included
This is the free Homeschool Belle / Magical Childhood 34-week Magic School Bus plan—a spreadsheet schedule for roughly a school year (late August through mid-May), not a single worksheet pack.
Each week generally follows four days:
- Magic School Bus episode (video day)
- Recommended book on the same subject
- Related project (often a linked hands-on idea)
- Second video (often BrainPOP Jr.–style follow-up)
Themes sometimes line up with the calendar (eggs near Easter, hearts around Valentines, construction around St. Patrick’s Day). The plan skips heavy holiday weeks around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter.
Honest notes before you print a year calendar:
- Some older project links inside the spreadsheet may be stale—swap in a library book, a kitchen experiment, or an FHD science printable when a link fails.
- The hub describes the plans as generally secular, with occasional holiday/faith-related weeks. Skip or swap those weeks if they don’t fit your home.
- This replaces the old the previous source 180-day / 13-unit pack previously linked on FHD—that site is no longer available.
Affordability note: The plans are free. Episodes are often available through streaming you already pay for, or free via the library. Projects lean on common materialsso a science year doesn’t have to mean a science budget.
How to Use This Page
- Open the spreadsheet and pick the current week (or a topic your kids care about).
- Watch the Magic School Bus episode through streaming, library DVD, or whatever legal access you already have.
- Read the suggested book or a library stand-in on the same topic.
- Do the projector swap in an FHD science printable if the linked activity is gone.
- Finish with the second video / notebooking so learning sticks without a heavy workbook.
Thats the whole rhythm: watch → read → project → wrap-up.
Sample 1-Week Mini Unit
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| Mon | Watch the episode together. Pause once to ask, “What do you notice? |
| Tue | Read the recommended book (or a library book on the same topic). |
| Wed | Do the related project—or an FHD science printable if the link is broken. |
| Thu | Second video day from the plan, or a short kitchen experiment. |
| Fri | Notebooking: one picture + 1–3 sentences (or dictate for emerging writers). Optional catch-up. |
Messy is allowed. Ms. Frizzle would approve.
Why This Works for Frugal Homeschool Science
- Kids already care about the charactersless “selling” science at the table
- Video + book + project beats another unread textbook for many PreK–4 learners
- About 34 weeks of structure without purchasing a boxed science set
- Easy to pause, repeat a week, or skip ahead when life gets loud
Series note: Match topics to the classic Magic School Bus episodes listed in the plan. If your family watches a newer reboot, pair by topic rather than assuming identical episode titles.
