How to Use LEGOs in Your Homeschool
Not sure where to start? Here are some practical tips:
Replace worksheets with bricks. Instead of a math worksheet, have your child build arrays with LEGO bricks to practice multiplication. Instead of a writing prompt on paper, have them build something and then write about it. The physical building engages different parts of the brain and helps concepts stick.
Use challenge cards for transitions. The hardest part of the homeschool day is often the transition between subjects. A 10-minute LEGO challenge between math and reading gives kids a mental break while keeping them engaged and creative.
Let kids teach what they built. After completing a building challenge, ask your child to explain their creation. What did they build? Why did they make certain choices? What was the hardest part? This develops oral communication skills and metacognition — and it takes zero prep from you.
Create a LEGO station. Designate a table or corner as the permanent LEGO workspace. Keep challenge cards, writing prompts, and building supplies accessible so kids can grab them during free time. Learning happens when it’s easy to start.
Don’t separate “LEGO time” from “school time.” LEGO building IS school. It covers engineering, math, spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, following instructions, creative design, and storytelling. Let it count.
