Tips for Teaching Handwriting
Start with big movements. Before pencil-to-paper, have kids practice letter shapes in sand, with finger paint, on a whiteboard, or in the air. Big motor movements build the muscle memory that transfers to small pencil control.
Short sessions daily beat long sessions weekly. Ten minutes of handwriting practice every day produces better results than a 45-minute session once a week. Little hands get tired quickly, and pushing through fatigue leads to sloppy habits.
Let them choose the writing tool. Some kids do better with thick pencils, some with thin. Gel pens, markers, and even crayons can make handwriting practice more appealing. The tool matters less than the consistency of practice.
Use copywork for double duty. Why practice handwriting with meaningless sentences when your child can copy Scripture, poetry, science facts, or historical quotes? Copywork teaches content while building penmanship.
Don’t skip cursive. Even if your state doesn’t require it, cursive has real cognitive benefits. It’s faster than print for note-taking, it engages different brain pathways, and many kids find it easier than print once they learn it — especially kids with dyslexia.
Laminate and reuse. Print your favorite handwriting pages on cardstock, laminate them, and use dry-erase markers. One printable becomes unlimited practice.
