Combine handwriting practice with American history using this free Preamble to the Constitution copywork. This printable set includes both manuscript and cursive versions, so it works for a range of ages and skill levels.
Why Copywork Works
Copywork is one of the simplest and most effective homeschool methods — and it’s been used for centuries. When kids copy meaningful text by hand, they’re practicing several skills at once: handwriting formation, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and content knowledge. The Preamble is an especially powerful piece for copywork because every word is intentional and worth discussing.
What Your Kids Will Learn
The Preamble to the Constitution opens with some of the most important words in American history. As your children copy the text, take time to discuss what phrases like “We the People,” “form a more perfect Union,” “establish Justice,” and “secure the Blessings of Liberty” actually mean. This turns a simple handwriting exercise into a rich civics lesson.
Who This Is Best For
Manuscript version: Great for kids in grades 2–4 who are still developing their print handwriting, or for older kids who need print practice.
Cursive version: Perfect for grades 3–6 and up who are learning or refining cursive. Copying real text is much more engaging than repetitive letter drills.
This copywork also pairs well with a Constitution Day study (September 17), Presidents’ Day, or any American history or government unit.
