Sharks are some of the most fascinating creatures in the ocean — and learning about their life cycle is a great way to hook kids on marine science. These free shark life cycle worksheets from Living Life and Learning give your child two different hands-on ways to explore how sharks grow and develop.
What’s Included
This free printable set includes two styles of life cycle worksheets:
- Fill-in-the-blank version — Students read about each stage of the shark life cycle and fill in key terms using a word bank. Great for building reading comprehension and science vocabulary at the same time.
- Cut-and-paste version — Kids cut out images and terms, then paste them in the correct order around the life cycle diagram. This tactile approach works especially well for hands-on learners and younger students.
Fun Shark Facts for Kids
Share these with your kids while they work through the worksheets:
Not all sharks reproduce the same way. Some species lay eggs (called mermaid’s purses), while others give birth to live babies. A few species even keep the eggs inside their body until they hatch — so the pups are born live but developed from eggs.
Sharks have been around for over 400 million years. That means sharks existed before dinosaurs and before trees! They’ve survived five mass extinction events.
Baby sharks are called pups. Depending on the species, a mother shark can have anywhere from 2 to over 100 pups at a time. Most shark pups are independent from birth — no parenting required.
Sharks play a critical role in ocean ecosystems. As apex predators, they help keep fish populations balanced and ocean ecosystems healthy. Without sharks, the entire marine food chain would be disrupted.
Ways to Extend the Lesson
Compare life cycles: Put the shark life cycle worksheet next to a frog or butterfly life cycle and compare. Which animals go through metamorphosis? Which have live births? This builds critical thinking about animal classification.
Watch a documentary: Pair these worksheets with an age-appropriate shark documentary. Many are available free on YouTube or through streaming services.
Visit an aquarium: If possible, plan a field trip to a local aquarium with a shark exhibit. Have your child bring their completed worksheet and see if they can identify what stage of life the sharks they see are in.
Ocean unit study: Use this as one piece of a larger ocean or marine biology unit. Combine it with resources on coral reefs, sea turtles, whales, and ocean habitats.
