When you need ten quiet minutes, maybe to get the baby down or help an older child with a tricky lesson, it helps to have something your little ones can do on their own that still makes them think. Picture sudoku fits that spot. KinderSudoku has a big set of free printable sudoku for kids, with animals, fruit, colors, letters and numbers, from a tiny 4×4 grid up to a full 9×9.
What’s Included
There are 27 ready-made worksheets, and each one has 6 puzzles plus the answers at the end.
- 4×4 sudoku: animals, fruit, numbers, letters and colors, from easy to hard
- 6×6 sudoku: animals, numbers, letters and colors, from easy to hard
- 9×9 sudoku: animals and numbers, from easy to hard
- Cut-out sheets: an easy 4×4 and an easy 6×6 animal set, each with a page of the missing pictures for every puzzle, so kids can cut and glue them in
- Letter sudoku and color sudoku sets, for kids who are working on letters or love to color
KinderSudoku also has a free 35-page Sudoku Book for kids. It has a kid-friendly how-to page, 40 picture puzzles from easy 4×4 to 9×9, the solutions at the back and a “Sudoku Pro” certificate to finish.
Every sheet has a spot for your child’s name and the date. All the files are sized for A4 paper.
Who It’s For
Preschoolers and early elementary kids, up to about age 8, plus older siblings who want a bigger challenge. KinderSudoku suggests 4×4 picture sudoku for preschoolers (they can color in, cut out and glue the pictures), 6×6 as an early-finisher task for school-age kids, and 9×9 as a challenge. Siblings can work on the same size at different levels, so everyone can join in.
How to Use It
- Begin small: the rule is simple. Every picture appears once in each row, each column and each thick box. Name the pictures together before your child begins.
- Use a pencil: kids who don’t like drawing can write the first letter of each picture instead.
- Ask, don’t tell: “Which picture is still missing in this row?” helps more than pointing to the answer.
- Keep it short: one or two puzzles at a time is plenty for little ones.
- Toss a few in your bag: they’re great for car trips, restaurants and waiting rooms.
