What Is Pi Day?
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) because the mathematical constant pi begins with 3.14. The holiday was founded by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 and has become a beloved tradition in math classrooms and homeschools everywhere.
Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter — it’s the same for every circle, no matter how big or small. The digits of pi go on forever without repeating (3.14159265358979…), which is part of what makes it so fascinating to mathematicians and kids alike.
Fun Ways to Celebrate Pi Day
Eat pie! This is the most important tradition. Pizza pie, dessert pie, pot pie — any kind counts. My kids won’t let me forget our annual Pizza Pi dinner.
Memorize digits of pi. Challenge your kids to memorize as many digits as they can. The current world record is over 70,000 digits, but even getting to 10 (3.1415926535) is impressive for a kid.
Measure circles. Grab a tape measure and find circular objects around the house. Measure the circumference and diameter of each one, then divide. Your answer should always be close to 3.14 — that’s pi in action!
Read a pi book. Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi by Cindy Neuschwander is a wonderful picture book that introduces pi through a medieval adventure story.
Do these logic puzzles. Obviously.
