Sommer wrote in to share her homeschool shopping trip at the Dollar Tree.
Here’s what Sommer wanted to share:
Now is the time to start looking out for deals at your local Dollar Tree. Most classroom teachers are in “summer mode”, so you should be able to find the store shelves stocked with items for the upcoming year. My local Dollar Tree has a very large selection of teaching items – remember at the Dollar Tree / Dollar store every item is just $1.00. From organization items, paper, posters, certificates, practice pages, die cuts, notebooks, arts and crafts items the list goes on for things that you can find there.
Here are some of the things I bought for just a dollar each (items in store will vary by region):
- Scholastic Animal Genius computer game (currently on sale for $6.40 on Amazon)
- Scholastic I Spy Fantasy computer game ( currently on sale got $12.99 on Amazon)
- Paper plate animal crafts -3 crafts per pack
- Large Die Cut animals
- Addition, Subtraction, Mini Books (sight words), and Timed Tests reproducible packets -38 pages each
- Classroom posters 2 per pack.
Be sure to share your Dollar Tree homeschool shopping success stories in the comments!

I love your site and all of the information you share! I LOVE Dollar Tree a little too much and often call it “$30 Dollar Tree”. These aren’t necessarily homeschool related, but could be used as rewards and for quiet time. I love the read along bible story book/cd sets. They are well done and have 10 songs after the story that are really good too. I use the glow in the dark stickers, animals, necklace/bracelets/glow sticks as living room camp out treats. We have a chart for my oldest to encourage him to stay in his bed all night. When he does this 10 times in a row, he earns a camp out. He uses the glow sticks as night lights. Fun, fun! 🙂

I love the Dollar Tree, but I’m always careful to be sure that it’s an actual savings. Yes, I can get a pack of 20 paper plates for $1 there, but if I can get 140 plates for $2 at Target, its waaaay cheaper to buy it elsewhere. I find that most craft stuff is cheaper (by the item) elsewhere. However, school- or season-specific stuff and unique items are GREAT to grab at the Dollar store. They frequently have things I’ve never seen elsewhere and I kick myself if I don’t buy them when I see them lol.

I have an idea. Dollar Tree has a website where you can buy things in bulk. Shipping is free if you have it shipped to the Dollar Tree store of your choice. And if you’re a swagbuck collector then you get swagbucks for every dollar spent on the website. So the things that are actual deals if you get them from the dollar store (like the composition books) should be ordered there! Also, if you know that at one point dollar tree sold the item but you don’t see it at the store or on their website, then you can call them directly and more than half the time they have it to ship. You don’t get your swag bucks calling them but you still get what you need. I ordered the k-2nd composition books by calling them directly. All-in-all, I get 25 comp books for $27 (tax), it’s easier for me to shop with small children if all i’m doing is placing boxes in my car (and not wondering up and down the isles), and more convenient.
