How to Save Money on Gas
This is a guest post from FHD reader, Sommer.
Remember when gas prices were $0.99-$1.23 a gallon, 10-15 years ago? We complained about the rising prices. What we wouldn’t give to pay those prices today.
Guess what? You can.
Many big box stores like Giant, Weis, Kroger, Safeway, and occasionally Kmart offer gas points rewards programs. These point programs can earn you as much as $2.20 off per gallon of gas, up to 35 gallons. The grocery store where we shop to earn our gas points is Giant.
At Giant (and from what I’ve read, other stores’ programs are similar) you earn a gas point for every dollar spent, plus bonus points on items that are included in the weekly special. The limit is 2,200 points or $2.20 off per gallon up to 35 gallons. If we exceed the 2,200 point limit, those points roll over to start accumulating for the next discount.
We base everything on 35 gallons because my husband and I fill our two vehicles at the same time. The discount works once, then starts over. We always get 35 gallons. If the vehicles aren’t low enough to use our complete savings, we’ll take a gas can to ensure we get our maximum savings.
Here is the current Giant ad to explain – Clorox cleaner is on sale 2/$4. If you buy 5 of any items included you get 400 gas points or $0.40 off per gallon. If you bought 5 Clorox cleaners you would pay $10.00, but now you have $0.40 off per gallon of gas. If you multiply the $0.40 off times 35 you get $14.00. So already you will save $14.00 off your 35 gallons of gas. But, you only spent $10.00 to get the points, so you are still ahead by $4.00!
No, you may not need cleaner, but you’re actually making money by buying it. There have been weeks that I have purchased the maximum amount allowed, which is 10 per household, and have totally stocked up on things like grab and go snacks, cereal, and so on.
If you have coupons for the items of the week you can save even more. The points are good for only 30 days so try not to get too far ahead.
So grab your sale circulars and calculator, work the math, and soon you’ll be able to buy gas at the prices of yesteryear.
Have you worked these store programs to save money on gas? Do you know other ways to save money on gas?

This is a great way to save $ and stock up if you have them $ to do so at the time.
We are very luck to have a store that not only has no limit on the number of gas points but they also are good for 2 months from the end of the month. So all points earned in October are good till the end of December.
That’s really nice, Celine!
