Saving money and making smart buying decisions during the holiday season can be achieved with some simple planning.
We allow for a little more money in our food budget during the months of November and December, not because of gatherings, but because it is a great time to stock up our pantry on staple items that we use throughout the year.
We take advantage of the great food prices we see popping up around Thanksgiving. Many staple items are placed on sale starting about 2-3 weeks before Thanksgiving. This is a great time to think about what your family uses throughout the year, and what items would come in handy for the beginning of the new year when budgets are typically a bit tighter.
Here are just a few examples of things we stock up on (prices based on the lowest I can find in my area without a coupon; having a coupon would make the cost even lower):
*Stove Top Stuffing $0.88 a box
*Campbell’s Condensed Soups $0.50 a can
*Libby’s and Del Monte Canned Vegetables $0.50 a can
*Heinz Gravy 12-18 oz. $0.99 a jar
The best money saving tip I suggest to everyone is to take advantage of the low turkey prices!
In our area, turkeys can be found for as low as $0.55 per pound when on sale. Our family, along with many friends, try to buy 8-10 turkeys each. Over the course of the year, these turkeys really help save money on the food budget, especially with the rising costs of meat.
For our family, a 20 lb. turkey can feed us, on average, six dinner meals. We typically cook one turkey a month (except for the hot summer months), make about three dinners from it, and then freeze the leftover meat in dinner-sized portions to be used during the remainder of the month. One turkey, at approximately $11.00, provides us with meat for up to six meals and helps us to continue to save during the entire year.

I try to buy a full years worth of all my baking chips, like chocolate chips, butterscotch, etc.. There are coupons out there for them and it is about the only time of the year they are on sale. I get enough to make cookies & candies with throughout the year.
