This post is by Karen of Bible Based Homeschooling on a Budget.
This year we followed God’s leading and decided to use the Bible as our main text in our homeschool. I felt a strong desire to dig into the Word as a family and let God be our Teacher. I realized if we were seeking Him first, then the most important lessons were being learned. Everything we studied, for the most part, came from our Bible studies. For instance during our Creation studies we learned about animals, plants, classification, and more. We learned about evolution vs. creation and writing assignments also were based on these topics. When we learned about Noah and the Flood we corresponded much of the geography to our studies. We also learned so much about fossils and geology at that time. Near the end of Genesis and into Exodus we found ourselves immersed in Ancient Egypt. We no longer separated subjects daily into history, geography, science, etc. but they all just naturally came about from studying the Bible. We did use many other supplements and a separate math curriculum, but overall the Bible was our spine.
During this time my husband also lost his job. We quickly needed to evaluate our budget and we were able to learn so much using the vast array of free resources available to homeschoolers. Since our number one resource was the Bible, we supplemented mainly with the library and the internet. 🙂 It has been an amazing year of learning for our family- God has provided abundantly more than we ever could have imagined. All of the resources we have needed have been a blessing and using the Bible as our main text also was a true gift from God. At a time in our lives when we were struggling with job loss and with fear, God knew we would need to be in His Word more than ever before. Isn’t He amazing to provide that for us?

I’m blogging a series called Finding God in Children’s Literature, where I look at similarities between classic children’s books and Bible stories. Here’s one on Yertle the Turtle and the Tower of Babel http://contemplativehomeschool.wordpress.com/2013/04/05/yertle-in-babylon/
and Peter Rabbit and the Fall of Man http://contemplativehomeschool.wordpress.com/2012/12/11/peter-rabbit-and-the-fall-of-man/

This is more, a curriculum for children’s church, but it has scripture put to music, and sign language to go along with it. They also have hymns in sign language. The lessons are topical and are in 3 week rotations – OT lesson, Church history lesson, NT lesson. It is nice, but a little cumbersome to use.
