Pumpkin season is here, and one inexpensive pumpkin can carry a whole unit study. Alabama Ag in the Classroom shares a free 39-page Pumpkin Unit full of hands-on activities. It covers how pumpkins grow, pumpkin math, graphing, poems and songs, and even roasted pumpkin seeds. Use it for a week-long pumpkin study at home or a ready-made co-op plan.

What’s included
- A 39-page unit, originally written for elementary classroom teachers.
- Science activities: Seeds of Discovery, How Pumpkins Grow, Gardening with the Three Sisters, and watching the stages of plant development.
- Pumpkin math: a pumpkin graph and pumpkin word problems.
- Language arts: pumpkin poetry and songs like “Five Little Pumpkins” and “Ten Little Pumpkins.”
- Pumpkin treats and art, including Roasted Pumpkin Seeds and The Artistic Pumpkin.
Honest note: this is an older teacher unit, so some directions mention classrooms and schools. Each activity also works on its own, so pick what fits your family. A few crafts and songs mention jack-o-lanterns and Halloween; skip those if you prefer.
Who it’s for
The unit was written for elementary teachers. It works best for older elementary kids, who can handle the word problems (multi-step pumpkin math with money and multiplication), measuring, graphing and seed experiments. Younger siblings can join in for the songs and seed roasting. It’s also a ready-made plan for co-op leaders who need a pumpkin day that uses inexpensive, easy-to-find materials.
How to use
- Turn it into a pumpkin week, with a science, math or poetry activity each day.
- Buy one pumpkin and use it for measuring, graphing and a seed count.
- Split the activities into stations for a co-op pumpkin day.
- Finish with roasted pumpkin seeds as a cozy family treat.
Bonus: free pumpkin activity book from Texas Farm Bureau
For a quick add-on, Texas Farm Bureau shares a free 4-page pumpkin activity book. It covers the pumpkin plant life cycle, labeling the parts of the plant, a grow-your-own-seed-in-a-bag experiment and a “where pumpkins grow in Texas” map page.
