Once fall evenings get dark before dinner, it’s easy to feel like nature study is over until spring. It doesn’t have to be! Grab a flashlight and step into the backyard, and a whole new world of spiders, beetles, mushrooms and moths is waiting. Muddy Boots Explorers shares a free 8-page night walk nature study that turns an after-dark stroll into a real science lesson. It has three levels, so kids ages 3–12 can all head out together.
What’s included
- A cover page with “Pick your level” guidance and five simple Night Walk Rules (a grown-up leads the way, use a soft light, look but don’t touch, put logs back, walk around webs).
- The Night Walk Hunt: a picture checklist with a spider web, mushrooms, a millipede, a ground beetle, a snail or slug, an earthworm, a moth and shelf fungus, plus a draw-your-favorite-find box.
- A one-minute “listen” activity and a roly-poly count.
- Night Walk Bingo and Little Ranger Senses for the youngest explorers.
- Spider or Insect? (count the legs and body parts) and Web Detective (orb web, funnel web, cobweb tally).
- Log Detective: a find-it picture and a chart of legs and animal groups for roly-polies, millipedes, centipedes, beetles, spiders, worms and slugs.
- Forest Recyclers: put the steps from fallen leaf to new soil in order, plus a leaf-hunt challenge and a cricket thermometer math activity.
- “Meet Marbles” the marbled orb weaver, a Spare the Spiders promise, a web-drawing box and a Night Walk Explorer certificate.
- A grown-up page with answers, free app and website ideas, and a peek at the publisher’s other nature badges.
Honest notes: the download opens a public Google Drive file. No sign-up or email is needed, but it’s about 8.7 MB, so Wi‑Fi helps. The pages are US Letter. It’s free to print and share with families and classrooms (please don’t resell it). The last page also promotes Muddy Boots Explorers’ paid badge packs on Etsy, and you don’t need them for the walk. Spiders are a big part of this one, so give a heads-up to anyone in the family who isn’t a fan.
Who it’s for
Ever tried to find one nature activity that works for your preschooler and your preteen at the same time? This pack splits it into levels. Sprouts (ages 3–5) do the hunt, bingo and senses pages. Explorers (ages 6–9) add the night sounds, Spider or Insect? and Log Detective. Trailblazers (10+) do it all, plus Web Detective, Forest Recyclers and the cricket thermometer.
How to use
- A grown-up should always lead a night walk. Stay together, stay close to home, and keep little ones within arm’s reach.
- Pack a flashlight, a pencil, a clipboard and warm layers. The pack suggests taping red cellophane over the flashlight so everyone’s eyes keep adjusting to the dark.
- Do the hunt and bingo pages outside, then finish the charts, drawings and certificate at the kitchen table.
- Try the cricket thermometer on a warm evening and check your answer against a real thermometer.
- Read the Spare the Spiders promise together before you go, and sign it when you get back.
