Black History Month (February): Dr. King is one of the most important figures in American history. Include this packet alongside other Black history resources for a comprehensive study.
Any American history unit: When studying the civil rights movement, the 1960s, or American leaders, this packet provides an age-appropriate entry point.
Teaching Tips
Start with a read-aloud. Books like Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport or I Am Martin Luther King, Jr. by Brad Meltzer give kids the story behind the facts before they dive into the worksheets.
Discuss the “I Have a Dream” prompt deeply. Before kids write, have a family discussion about what they would change about the world if they could. This makes the writing more personal and meaningful.
Connect to today. Talk about how Dr. King’s work continues to matter. What does equality look like in their community? How can they be leaders in kindness and justice?
