How This Printable Works
Kids look at the shape of each continent and match it to its location on the world map. This is a visual-spatial exercise that teaches continent recognition without requiring reading skills, making it accessible for preschoolers and toddlers as well as older elementary students who are building their geography knowledge.
Why Start Geography Early
Young children are naturally curious about the world. Starting geography with the big picture — the 7 continents and the overall shape of the world map — gives kids a framework they’ll build on for years. When they later learn about specific countries, cultures, or historical events, they’ll already have a mental map to place that knowledge on.
The matching format also builds important cognitive skills: visual discrimination, spatial reasoning, and the ability to recognize shapes in different orientations.
Ways to Extend the Lesson
Name and locate: After matching, practice naming each continent together. Point to each one on the map and say its name. Repetition builds recall.
Animal connections: Talk about which animals live on each continent. Penguins in Antarctica, kangaroos in Australia, elephants in Africa — kids love connecting animals to places.
Food exploration: Try a food from each continent over the course of a week or month. Italian pasta (Europe), sushi (Asia), tacos (North America), etc.
Globe comparison: If you have a globe, find each continent on both the flat map and the globe. This helps kids understand that maps are flat representations of a round world.
