For many homeschooling families, May is a joyous time. Curriculum is finished, tests are taken, and projects are completed. It’s time to take a breath and look back at all you have accomplished during the year.
It’s time to celebrate!
You know you want to do something to mark the occasion, but you don’t want to break the bank. Are there fun ways to recognize the end of the school year that are also frugal?
Yes!
How can you commemorate the end of the school year?
Celebrate with a Field Trip
If you’re not a family that takes a lot of field trips during the school year, think about ending your year with one. Get out of the house and explore together!
Is there a location near you that relates to what you learned during the year? Is there a place your kids asked to go to during the school year, but you kept putting it off?
Award everyone and take that trip now, before it gets too hot and crowded.
Celebrate with Food
Most of our celebrations revolve around food, so why not end the school year with something tasty? Consider offering choices that are different from your normal fare, perhaps with a bunch of options for everyone.
Kids love making their own creations!
- Make your own sundaes. Grab a bunch of ice cream flavors and as many toppings as you can think of and let your kids build their dream sundaes. Maybe offer some candy and fresh fruit in addition to your normal choices of sprinkles and whipped cream.
- Have a taco or pizza bar. The toppings make these a hit with the kids! Think about making some fresh salsa and offering taco bowls instead of plain tortillas. Are you a meat pizza lover? Veggie fan? Cheese connoisseur? Make sure you have all of your favorites available.
- How about a fondue night? Make cheese fondue and cut up some crusty bread, granny smith apples, and carrots to dip into it. Or stick with dessert and make a chocolate fondue. You can dip in fruit, marshmallows, and pound cake.
Celebrate with Friends
If you don’t want to celebrate alone, invite some of your homeschooling friends over (or head to a local park) and host a potluck lunch or dinner. Choose a theme and have everyone bring something related to it.
If everyone contributes, the cost won’t be burdensome for anyone.
Most likely, your kids will appreciate having a chance to play with their friends without having to do any “school.”
We actually school year-round, so we don’t mark the end of a school year. However, one year we did commemorate the end of our co-op year by hosting a murder mystery party. It was a blast!
However you decide to observe the end of the year, include your kids in the planning. It will make it more meaningful for them. Plus, it’s their hard work that you’re honoring!
How does your family celebrate the end of a school year?
