Copywork is one of those simple habits that quietly builds handwriting, spelling and a love of good words, but finding passages worth copying (and ruling the lines yourself) takes time. Quillstead shares free public domain copywork worksheets: 44 printable PDFs with the model text at the top and handwriting rows underneath. The PDFs open straight from the page, with nothing to sign up for.
What’s Included
Each worksheet is a US Letter PDF with the passage printed above handwriting rows (a solid headline, dashed midline and baseline). The 44 passages are sorted into four groups:
- Bible: King James Version Psalms and Proverbs passages, such as Psalm 23, Psalm 100 and Proverbs 3
- Literature: openings from Little Women and The Tale of Peter Rabbit, plus Aesop’s “The Hare and the Tortoise”
- Poetry: Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and William Blake
- Speeches: the Gettysburg Address, the opening of the Declaration of Independence and the close of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
Each passage is marked short, medium or long and beginner, intermediate or challenging, so you can pick one that fits your child. The worksheets we opened ran 3 to 4 pages each.
Who It’s For
Following a Charlotte Mason approach, or just want handwriting practice with more substance than “the cat sat on the mat”? These pages suit kids who can already form their letters and are ready to copy real sentences. With beginner-to-challenging passages in one place, a younger writer and an older sibling can both find something.
How to Use Them
- Read it aloud first: talk through any unfamiliar words, capitals or punctuation before the pencil touches the page.
- A few good lines: stop when attention fades and pick up tomorrow, rather than rushing a whole page.
- Pair it with a lesson: copy the Gettysburg Address during a Civil War study, or a Frost poem during poetry tea time.
- Try the keyboard: each worksheet has an optional online version, so kids can type the same passage after copying it by hand.
