If your kids have been begging for a pet, you already know the promises: “I’ll feed it every day!” A simple checklist on the fridge helps turn those promises into real habits. What Pet Should I Get shares free pet care printables for families: a 3-page New-Pet Care Checklist plus 20 one-page care sheets for the five pets families ask about most. There’s no sign-up.
What’s Included
The New-Pet Care Checklist (3 pages):
- “Are we ready for a pet?”, a family readiness checklist to work through together before you decide
- “Before you bring your pet home”, a setup checklist for a calm first day
- “Everyday care routine”, with daily, weekly and now-and-then jobs
20 one-page care sheets, four each for a dog, cat, guinea pig, hamster and leopard gecko:
- A daily care checklist with morning, daytime and evening jobs (one sheet lasts a week)
- A new-pet supply checklist with a settling-in plan for the first hour and first night
- A weekly and monthly care sheet with four weeks of tick boxes and a weight-and-notes log
- A healthy signs and vet signs sheet
The health sheets are meant to help a child notice changes and tell a grown-up. They aren’t a diagnosis, so call your vet when in doubt.
Who It’s For
Is a pet at the top of someone’s wish list this year? The readiness checklist is a gentle way to talk it through as a family before you say yes, and the care sheets give kids who already have a pet a clear set of daily jobs. The publisher doesn’t list an age range, so younger children may need a grown-up to read the sheets with them.
How to Use Them
- Family meeting: go through “Are we ready for a pet?” together before you visit a shelter or pet store.
- Fridge chart: post the daily care checklist and let your child tick each box.
- Life skills: count pet care as part of your homeschool responsibility or chore routine.
- Animal study: add a care sheet to an animal unit, even if the pet lives at Grandma’s house.
- Save ink: every sheet is its own one-page printable, so print only the pet you need.
