FREE First Day of School Chalkboard Printables — Photo Props for Every Grade

Capture your child’s first day of school with these free printable chalkboard signs from Making Frugal Fun. They’re simple photo props—print the grade that matches, have your kid hold the sign, and snap a picture. Homeschool families love this tradition just as much as brick-and-mortar schools do, and you can reuse the habit every August (or whenever your new year actually starts).

Who It’s For

Anyone who wants a frugal, printable first-day photo prop:

  • Homeschool families documenting day one at the kitchen table or front door
  • Traditional or hybrid school mornings
  • Mid-year or January “fresh start” photos—not only August
  • Parents who like a year-to-year comparison shot in the same spot

Tips for Great First-Day Photos (year-round)

  1. Same spot every year: Front door, favorite tree, or your homeschool table. The backdrop makes growth comparisons magical.
  2. Print on cardstock: Heavier paper holds up better as a handheld prop (copy paper works in a pinch).
  3. Add a personal touch: Age, teacher” (that’s you!), favorite subject, or a quick first-day interview on the back of the photo.
  4. Siblings: Individual grade signs, then one group shot with everyone holding theirs.
  5. Save for next August: Keep the PDF; check the publisher page each summer for the updated school-year file before peak photo week.
