That moment your early reader realizes that if they can read “cat,” they can also read “hat,” “mat” and “rat” is pure gold. Getting there can take a lot of patient practice, though. BundleBrain Studio has a free 14-page set of CVC word family worksheets that walks kids through it one family at a time.
What’s Included
The pack covers five word families: –at, –en, –it, –og and –ug. Each family has four real words, so there are 20 CVC words in all (cat, hen, sit, dog, bug and friends).
- Five focus pages, one per family, with six tasks each
- A 20-word family sort
- Ten first-letter changes (for example, change cat to hat)
- Twenty listening-and-writing items: you say the word, they write it
- A reusable word-building mat with first-letter cards and ending cards
- A reference chart of all five families
- A grown-up reading guide and two answer pages
That’s 14 A4 pages altogether.
Who It’s For
BundleBrain suggests ages 5 to 7, reading together with a grown-up, for kids who know their common letter sounds and are just beginning to blend simple three-sound words. They also say age is only a guide, so go by your child’s readiness, not the number.
How to Use It
- Blend one family: on the –at page, sound out cat, hat, mat and rat together. Read the whole word each time.
- Change the first letter: swap the c for an h, keep the –at, and ask what changed before they blend the new word.
- Mix it up: once a few families feel easy, try the sort and the one-letter changes.
- Keep writing optional at first: BundleBrain suggests focusing on reading the words, then using the later pages as review.
- Print the cards on light card: regular paper is fine for the worksheets. A grown-up should do the cutting, and the cards should stay at the printed size so they fit the mat.
