Want to give your little one a taste of Mandarin but don’t speak it yourself? Starting with one short poem, a recording and a few pages to color and trace is a gentle way in. Poetry Buds shares free Chinese poetry printables for ages 2–5 built around one classic poem, Li Bai’s “Thoughts on a Quiet Night” (静夜思), with English support for grown-ups. There’s no sign-in needed for this lesson.
What’s Included
This is one free full lesson; Poetry Buds sells its full poetry series separately. The printables are in the “Print” section of the lesson page, in two A4 PDFs:
- An 11-page workbook
- A 3-page print pack: the poem with pinyin, a drawing activity and an activity for the character 月 (moon)
The print-pack pages also appear in the workbook, so you have 11 unique pages in all. The lesson page itself also has audio of the poem, a read-along video and simple on-page games.
Heads up: the worksheets are Chinese-led with English support, not fully in English. The English parent guide is on the lesson page, and the publisher says an English PDF edition is still in preparation.
Who It’s For
Raising a bilingual family, or just curious about Chinese language and culture? The lesson is made for ages 2–5: little ones (2–3) listen and move along with the poem, while 4- and 5-year-olds start to read and express it. You don’t need to speak Mandarin, since the recording can lead and the English prompts help you along.
How to Use It
- Listen first: play the recording a few times and point to the moon together before you print anything.
- One page a day: pick a single drawing or character page and keep the session short.
- Bedtime routine: this moonlit poem makes a calm read-aloud at the end of the day.
- Printing tip: the PDFs are A4, so on US letter paper, choose “fit to page” in your print settings.
