For several years I didn’t think that my husband and I would truly be able to be debt free. We had had glimpses during different seasons. However we settled into the mind set that debt was a way of life and we’d always live with it.
Then a funny thing happened. My husband started listening to a man named Dave Ramsey in late 2011. For awhile I scuffed at Dave’s advice.
Yeah right, live on a budget. That’s nice if you make enough to pay your bills in the first place.
Yeah right, pay off all your debt with a debt snowball. That’s nice if you have two incomes.
You see where my mind was. And my thoughts were very valid.
After listening for a few weeks though I became encouraged that families who were making less than ours were getting focused, and half crazed, and paying off their debt.
Now my husband and I call ourselves Dave Ramsey evangelist! No, we’re not debt free. We’re on a journey. And we believe with hard work, determination, and our own dose of crazy, we WILL be debt free. Once we’re debt free we’ll be free to GIVE like wild people. As Dave says, we want to “live like no one else!” and change our family tree.
If you’re looking for daily encouragement in this journey to debt freedom, I highly recommend The Dave Ramsey Show. It’s so viral at our house that at night our children have the choice of either sleeping listening to the Bible, or Dave Ramsey. We’re certainly not putting Dave above the Lord by any means. Dave’s teachings are practical common sense that honestly we haven’t heard much of. His show is refreshing and full of hope!
We listen to Dave using the free iHeartRadio App on our phones and computer. His show plays in a continual 3-hour loop.
