This New 2020 Big List of 50+ FREE Online Games & Activities for Homeschoolers was inspired by a post from 2013. The list has been revised for 2020 and organized into handy groups. You can be sure that all the entries are up to date!
For those of you wondering why the list changed, many of the entries in the old list referred to sites that no longer exist or no longer work. Those that remained have changed and the descriptions have been updated to better match the site content.
Please take the time to check out a site below before letting your student use it unattended. Some of the sites may contain ads.
Free Online Learning Games and Activities
Kids entertainment favorites
PBS Kids – Tons of games and videos featuring favorites like Clifford and Curious George.
Sesame Street Games – All of the best Sesame Street characters packed into fun educational games for younger kids.
Nick Jr. – Preschool games and videos with characters from popular Nick Jr. shows.
Suessville – Online games and printables based on Dr. Seuss classics.
Peep and the Big Wide World – Fun games based on the popular show. Everything is also available in Spanish.
Highlights Kids – This site is packed full of thought puzzles just like the classic kids’ magazine.
National Geographic Kids – Nat Geo Kids has a number of games that follow a common mechanic, but they can be themed to the student’s preference. Each one has some learning built right in.
Brain breaks
GoNoodle – Educational videos and games designed to get your kids moving all ad-free. Sign up required.
Gametable – An ad-free, family-friendly site with logic and strategy games. The Checkers game is great to play together.
The Kids Should See This – A collection of interesting or calming videos curated for kids.
Cosmic Kids – Animated physical activity videos teaching Yoga. Perfect for indoor free time.
Ducksters – A collection of games, some educational, that are safe for kids.
Storyline – Storyline is an award-winning literacy website that features famous people reading children’s books. Students can follow the words and enjoy the colorful animations.
Poptropica – Created by the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Poptropica is an adventure game where students explore a virtual world while utilizing problem-solving skills and improving their literacy through a narrative rooted in factual history.
Online lessons, practice, and tools
Education.com – Pre-K to 5th-grade games, printables, and lesson plans. Topics range across math, reading, writing, typing, and even coding. The Ski Racer Math Series is great!
IXL – Math, language arts, science, and social studies practice work for pre-k through 12th grade. They also have a Spanish unit.
XtraMath – You can use your parent account to track your student’s progress as they practice their math skill. Free sign up required.
Khan Academy – Completely free educational videos across a broad array of topics.
ScootPad – ScootPad has math and reading activities and a parent dashboard but sign up is required.
Music Theory – Lesson and exercises focused on music.
Typing – Online typing practice that works well on the computer, mobile phones, or tablets.
Scholastic Learn at Home – Built specifically by for learning at home in 2020, this Scholastic site has month-long interactive activities for Pre-K to 9th grade.
History at Home – A free video series of brief history lessons from the History channel. Each video has an accompanying set of lesson plan worksheets. New episodes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Learning games and activities
iCivics – Social studies games focused on civics and the government. Available in English and Spanish.
Brain Pop – Full array of ad-free STEAM, language arts, and social studies games.
Starfall – Simple Pre-K to 3rd-grade songs and games for learning to read and teach math.
Mr. Nussbaum – Nr. Nussbaum’s site boasts over 3,500 free learning content pages with a boatload of games organized by grade level and content type.
Spelling City – Spelling City offers free spelling and language arts activities and printables.
ABCYa – Closely related to IXL, ABCYa offers games for Pre-K to 6th grade covering mostly language arts and math.
Turtle Diary – Turtle Diary has games for toddlers through 5th grade. Many of the games allow you to select any subject.
Arcademic Skill Builders – Math, spelling, typing, and geography games for grades 1-6.
Purpose Games – Students can create games, play games created by others, and compete in online leaderboards. There is a large range of topics.
Math Game Time – A ton of cute math games, videos, and worksheets for Pre-K to 7th Grade.
Mystery Science – Free science starter lessons and for a limited time a completely free membership to science resources.
826 Digital – Designed to inspire creative writing through online writing activities, 826 Digital is completely free and was partially built in collaboration with Cartoon Network and the Speak Up campaign.
Toy Theatre – A collection of interactive educational games. They’re all free and work on any device. The Mission Math Series is a wonderful throwback!
Best on computer
FreeTypingGame.net – A set of free typing games that look dated but are still a lot of fun!
Fun Brain – A plethora of free games, videos, and books available for Pre-K to 8th grade. A mixed basket of education and just for fun. The Math Zone is worth calling out on its own.
Math Playground – A swathe of math and problem-solving activities sorted by grade level and topic.
Learning Games for Kids – Educational games and songs in a vast set of categories: Math, Language Arts, Science, Nature, Logic, Keyboard, and many, many more.
Reading Bear – Free phonics quizzes and videos.
Multiplication.com – Games to help students with multiplication facts. The ads can be a little heavy at times.
Super Teacher Tools – A set of simple teacher tools to create quiz games, control the room, and more.
Soft Schools – Math games, grammar quizzes, as well as printable math and phonics worksheets for all grades.
Chrome Music Lab – An interactive music exploration tool that enables students to visualize music and its connections to math, science, and art.
Sheppard Software – Hundreds of free online educational games for kids broken down by subject matter.
Math is Fun – This site contains a wealth of online exercises. They’re geared more towards learning than fun, but they’re good. Grade level content goes all the way up to high school.
Mr. Donn – Mr. Donn’s history site has been around for a while, but it still has American History games that are real gems.
Code Combat – Free game-themed programming challenges that are sure to engage any creative kid who loves Legos.
Even more resources
Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool – A well-organized list of subject review games. Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool also has many other logic games that are great for students.
Math Learning Center – The Math Learning Center links to several math apps available online or downloadable as an iOS app. Perfect activities for iPad screen time.
Mensa for Kids – Unlike many of the above links this site is great for older students. It has a number of lesson plans and links a ton of information for home learning in 2020.
