Once young learners know most of their letters and letter sounds, it’s time to strengthen and grow their knowledge of how letter sounds work to form words. While long vowel sounds are easier to hear, short vowel words are the best place to start with young readers and spellers because their patterns are more consistent. For example, short a is almost always spelled with a single A. Long a can be spelled with several different patterns including A-E, AI, AY, EI, and EA.
Picking out short and simple texts that feature the short vowel words, like the BOB Books, is a wonderful place for young readers to begin their journey. {Note: These readers are only part of a balanced literacy program, which also includes read alouds, spelling instruction, and writing.} I love to mix in fun reading or spelling games along the way to change things up a bit.
One of my favorite tools is our Photo Stacking Blocks {these are NOT just for babies or photos!}. These soft blocks are GREAT for active kiddos and are SO versatile; they are well worth the investment. Today, I’m sharing a FREE Short Vowels Roll a Word Activity that you can use with these blocks. {If you don’t have the blocks, you can modify this activity without them, make your own, or use The Measured Mom’s short vowel cards instead.}

In this 26-pg pack, you’ll find beginning letter sound inserts (from single letters to blends and digraphs) with Teaching Tips along the way as to which inserts will work best for your young reader. Simply print off and cut out the inserts you need, insert them, and roll away!
This activity can be as easy or as challenging as you’d like it to be, depending on which inserts you use. There’s also a recording sheet to integrate spelling. And {BONUS!} this pack grows with your young reader/speller. She may roll, read, and spell words such as rat, map, and wag today. But several weeks later, she may be ready for lamp, clock, and stump.
